Dive Shops
Dive Shops - You’ve got to get your gear, lessons etc. from somewhere. Dive shops have become an essential part of the scuba diving experience. Some liken the dive shop to friendship: you want to have a friend that is dependable, honest and helpful. A good dive shop will be dependable (having the gear you need when you need it), honest (fair prices, straight forward sales) and helpful (willing to take the time to explain gear to you and help you pick out the right one). Quite simply, if you are a beginner or even an advanced scuba diver, it’s important to have a dependable dive shop. But the question is, how do you find such a dive shop?
Picking the Right Dive Shop
There is no dive shop that is ideal for every scuba diver. But there are those dive shops that may be right for certain people. As a scuba diver, it’s your opinion that determines what dive shop is right for you. How do you determine this?
1.Prices
As a scuba diver, there is nothing worse than paying way too much for a gear. Unfortunately, some dive shops are guilty of overcharging their customers. They mostly do this because there is no competition, so they feel they are able to rip off customers. This is why, when looking at shops, you should pick one that has competitive prices. To see if the prices are competitive, check out other dive shops in the area or perhaps those online. Don’t go to a shop that charges you too much for a pair of flippers.
2.Friendliness
When most people walk into a store, they want to feel at home. They don’t want to be pressured and they don’t want to deal with unfriendly people. Most dive shops are quite friendly places with nice employees, but some are not. Stay away from any shop that makes you feel pressured to buy things. Also, do not put up with people in dive shops that act rude to you.
3.Selection
Walking into a tiny dive shop, while being very personal, isn’t going to help you any as a scuba diver. You want to go to a dive shop that has a decent selection so that you don’t have to run around from shop to shop to get the gear you need. This is why selection counts for so much when you are looking at dive shops.
4.Helpfulness
More than likely, you are a beginner. You may not know what the difference is between one mask and another. Therefore, you’d benefit from someone in a shop taking the time to explain it to you and answer your questions. All good dive shops have employees that are not just knowledgeable, but also helpful. Make sure that the dive shop you go to is helpful.
5.Years In Business
All businesses have to start somewhere, so don’t get discouraged if the dive shop you are considering hasn’t been in business for very long. That said, you should still be cautious when going to a dive shop that is pretty new. If the dive shop just opened up, you may want to ask other divers in the area about it, as well as check if they have any sort of certification. You could also run a quick Google check on the name of the business, as well as the name of the owner just to weed out any inaccuracies. It is important for you to know as much as possible about the dive shop, so that you do not get burned at all.
