Under water cameras underwater - In scuba diving, you are presented with a plethora of choices when it comes to gear, places to dive and instructors, among other things. But one thing you may be unaware of that features a lot of choices, is underwater cameras. Underwater photography is becoming more and more common for scuba divers nowadays, as many want to capture unique moments while diving. If you’re read our other article on digital underwater cameras, you’ve probably already learned a lot about underwater cameras. However, digital underwater cameras aren’t the only ones around: there are also other types of underwater cameras, some of which may be a better choice for you than a digital underwater camera. In this article, you’ll be learning a thing or two about underwater cameras.

Not Digital, Then What?

Non-digital underwater cameras use film. Yes, film is still used in cameras, sometimes to an even better result than digital pictures. The same film that may be used in your non-waterproof camera is used in the underwater camera as well.

Types of Underwater Cameras

There are three main types of underwater cameras: housed cameras, specially made underwater cameras and disposable underwater camera.

Housed Cameras

If you have a nice camera and want to put it to use underwater, you’ll most likely need to buy housing for it. Housing is like an external case for your camera that keeps it from getting damaged by the water. Housed cameras are regular cameras inside a waterproof case. They can be taken underwater without worrying about water damage.

Advantages of Housed Cameras

Less expensive than underwater cameras. You can typically buy a “house” for your camera for $200 or less. Compare this to the $300 you may pay for a decent underwater camera, and it’s really a better deal to buy housing.
Better quality. Underwater cameras haven’t quite caught up to regular cameras in terms of quality. You can usually get better quality pictures by using a housed camera rather than using an underwater camera.

Underwater Cameras

Of all the technological advances of the past 25 years, arguably one of the greatest ones is that of the underwater camera. It is simply fascinating to think that such a sophisticated device could be taken underwater without any damage. Underwater cameras are cameras  that are designed to be used in the water. They will cease to work like a regular camera would, as they are waterproof.

Advantages of Underwater Cameras

Designed to Be Taken Underwater. These cameras, unlike other cameras, are made to take underwater. Thus, they come with more guarantees to work underwater than does the housed camera.
Easy to Use. Because underwater cameras are made to be used underwater, they are typically easier to use.

Disposable Underwater Cameras

If you only want to take underwater pictures every once in a while, a disposable underwater camera could be right for you. Just like a regular disposable camera, disposable underwater cameras are meant to be used for one roll of film and that is it. Once you are done with said roll, you can toss out the underwater camera.

Advantages of Disposable Underwater Cameras

Cheap. If cost is a concern to you, you will probably be happy to learn that disposable underwater cameras are very inexpensive. You can typically buy them for less than $20. Pre-set Focus. Don’t want to mess around with the focus? No problem, as the disposable underwater camera does all the work for you. All you need to do is point and click.
